Universal Studios Singapore

Visiting Universal Studios was one of the few pre-planned activities we absolutely wanted to experience in Singapore. We had visited Universal Studios Hollywood during our Route 66 road trip, and since then, we’ve had a strong desire to return to this amazing theme park.

Universal Studios Singapore is located on Sentosa Island, which has a lot more to offer and could easily fill several days with exploration.

Taking the MRT to Sentosa Island

As mentioned in a previous post, we usually prefer to walk from place to place, but Universal Studios was about 8 kilometers away, so we decided to explore Singapore’s public transportation and took the MRT to Sentosa Island. Conveniently, there was a North East Line MRT station near our hotel, Farrer Park, which took us directly to HarbourFront station, located just in front of Sentosa Island.

Using the Singapore MRT is very easy. You don’t need a separate ticket; simply swipe your credit card at the gate, travel your desired route, and swipe your card again at the exit gate. The system calculates the distance traveled and charges accordingly. The metro ride from Farrer Park to HarbourFront took about 20 minutes and cost approximately 1,8 SGD (1,20 €) per person.

HarbourFront station is located in the basement of VivoCity mall, and you walk through the mall towards Sentosa Island. You can either walk across the bridge to the island or take the Sentosa Express train. We decided to walk and enjoy the views on our way to Universal Studios, located at the beginning of the island.

Amazing Universal Studios

Outside the theme park stands the iconic Universal Studios globe statue, rotating in the middle of a fountain. We had bought our tickets in advance online, allowing us to walk straight through the ticket check and into the park. Tickets for Universal Studios Singapore cost 129 SGD (about 88 €) per person.

The theme park starts with a Hollywood-themed street, immediately lifting our spirits. There were many mascots along the streets, and we enjoyed a Minion dance show for a while. Minions were prominently featured in the park, as a new Minion-themed area is under construction.

From Hollywood, we moved to the streets of New York and then to the Sci-Fi section, where we went on our first ride, the Transformers ride. At this point, it was hard to choose where to start, but we decided to begin exploring the rides.

At Universal Studios, they’ve made queuing entertaining, and while wait times can be long, the queue itself is part of the experience. The queuing environment is themed, and the path through the rooms always brings something new. Along the way, there might be videos that follow a story tied to the ride itself.

Wait times varied from 15 to 60 minutes depending on the ride, and each ride had an estimate of the current wait time, which was generally accurate. We also noticed that as the evening approached, the lines shortened, and it almost felt like a shame to rush through the queue areas without appreciating the detailed theming. The Revenge of the Mummy ride, in particular, was impressive, both in terms of the queue area and the ride itself.

There are restaurants throughout the park, and while prices are typical for a theme park, they are relatively reasonable. For example, at Fossil Fuel in The Lost World area, a large hot dog, sizable fries, water, and a soda cost around 30 SGD (about 20 €). Not cheap, but not outrageous either.

Our recommendations for rides/attractions for adults:

  • Transformers the Ride
  • Battlestar Galactica: Cyclon
  • Battlestar Galactica: Human
  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • Shrek’s Castle
  • WaterWorld
  • New York Waterfront
  • Lights, Camera, Action! show

The attractions in The Lost World and Far Far Away areas are mostly geared towards younger visitors, but the environments are impressive and thematic, so it’s worth checking out each area.

Comparing Hollywood and Singapore’s Universal Studios, we give the edge to Hollywood, which has a larger and more diverse selection of rides. Nevertheless, Universal Studios Singapore is a highly recommended place to visit and provided an entertaining day with its attractions. If you enjoy theme and amusement parks, don’t hesitate; it’s definitely worth the money!
