Torronsuo National Park, located in Tammela, is a remarkable natural destination and one of the finest in Southern Finland. Torronsuo is especially known for its vast open marshlands, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful day hike surrounded by nature. In fact, Torronsuo is the deepest bog in Finland, which adds to its allure, even if it isnโt immediately obvious to visitors. The park offers several trail options, ranging from short loops to longer hikes, and features boardwalks that allow you to walk through the marshlands.
During our visit, we focused on enjoying the marsh scenery from the boardwalks, taking in the breathtaking views from the birdwatching tower, and savoring the tranquility of a summer evening by the campfire.
Starting at Kiljamo Parking Area and Heading to the Birdwatching Tower
Torronsuo has two parking areas, Kiljamo and Pehku, which are relatively close to each other. However, Kiljamo parking area is more popular because it is closer to the birdwatching tower and the rest area. From Kiljamo, itโs only about a 300-meter walk along a well-maintained gravel path to the rest area and the tower, which can accommodate several groups. The sturdy Kiljamo bird watching tower is right next to the rest area, towering above the treetops. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with expansive views over the marshlands of the national park.
One of the great things about Torronsuo is that itโs stunning in all weather conditions. On clear days, you can see far into the distance from the bird watching tower, while on foggy days, the marsh transforms into a magical and misty landscape with an eerie atmosphere.

Well-Equipped Rest Area and Stunning Views from the Tower
The rest area is in great condition, featuring a large covered fireplace that can host bigger groups, as well as an uncovered fire pit. Dry firewood is available in the wood shed, and during our visit, there was plenty of it. The rest area also has outhouses.
Just next to the rest area stands the Kiljamo bird watching tower, which is 17 meters tall. From the top, you can enjoy panoramic views in every direction across the vast marshlands. The weather was clear during our visit, and the views were spectacularโwe could fully appreciate the wide expanse of the bog stretching out in every direction.
We paused at the tower to enjoy coffee from our thermos, and it was the perfect spot for a peaceful break. After taking in the scenery, we continued towards the main attraction: the bog itself, heading for the boardwalk section of the Suotaival Trail, which crosses the marsh.

Suotaival Trail: Boardwalk Section
After leaving the bird watching tower, we moved onto the Suotaival Trail, which is the parkโs longer and slightly more challenging route (about 8.5 km). However, we didnโt hike the entire trail, opting instead to focus on its most impressive partโthe boardwalk section through the marsh. This 3-kilometer stretch provides an excellent opportunity to admire the bog up close. Although the trail is moderately difficult, the boardwalk was easy to navigate, making it ideal for a leisurely walk. We stopped frequently to take in the scenery and snap photos.
We decided to turn back before reaching the far end of the marsh and retraced our steps along the boardwalk. From there, we continued on the Kiljamonkierros loop, a 1.5-kilometer circular trail that also passes through part of the marsh. Along this loop, thereโs a scenic overlook where you can enjoy beautiful views of the marsh. We paused briefly to take in the peaceful landscape, where shades of green and brown blended together harmoniously.
Completing the loop brought us back to our starting point at the rest area near the bird watching tower. After a short hike, it was nice to light a fire and relax by the flames as the evening darkened.
Had we continued along the Suotaival Trail, we would have arrived at the old Hรคrksaari quarry after the boardwalk. The quarry was once used for mining quartz and feldspar. From the quarry, the trail continues along a sandy road for a while before returning to the open marshland. We plan to hike the full trail on our next visit.

Both trails are accessible, making them suitable for wheelchair users and those with strollers.
