From Senja to Lofoten
After hiking Segla the previous day and spending a couple of nights in a good wild camping spot at Ersfjord Beach, it was time to say goodbye to Senja Island and head towards the Lofoten Islands. From Senja to the Lofoten Islands, one can either drive all the way via Narvik or take a ferry from Senja to Andรธya Island, which would shorten the journey by about 100 kilometers. We decided to take the road route, even though it’s a bit longer. We drove at a relaxed pace, stopping regularly to admire the breathtaking views.
We booked our next accommodation along the way at the Sure Hotel Harstad Narvik Airport. This hotel is located next to Narvik Airport and was conveniently situated for us when we arrived in the evening. The hotel was perfect for a one-night stay โ modern, clean, and a typical basic hotel.
The next morning, we continued our journey towards the Lofoten Islands. There’s still quite a bit of distance to cover before officially reaching the Lofoten Islands. The scenery along the way is so beautiful that the journey seems never-ending; we couldn’t help but stop frequently to admire the mountains and the turquoise sea. There are also lovely fishing villages with their red houses scattered along the way.
We explored the Lofoten Islands extensively, visiting fishing villages, admiring beaches and mountains, and going on several hikes.
Here’s a list of places we found worth experiencing:
Rรธrvikstranda: A lovely sandy beach in a small bay surrounded by turquoise sea and majestic mountains. A popular spot for camping, with toilet facilities available.
Batman Road: A stunning stretch of road with impressive mountains in the background, likely named after the bat-like mountain.
Nusfjord: A charming and picturesque fishing village with its red houses, located at the end of the aforementioned road.
Flakstadbruene: Two impressive curved bridges in succession, surrounded by stunning mountains.
Hamnรธy: A beautiful small fishing village on a tiny island, backed by towering mountains. The epitome of Lofoten scenery.
Reine: A slightly larger village adjacent to Hamnรธy. Also a prime example of the beauty of the Lofoten Islands and the starting point for the popular Reinebringen hiking trail, which I’ll detail in a separate post.
ร i Lofoten: A village at the tip of the Lofoten Islands, offering beautiful scenery and a cozy atmosphere.
Austnesfjorden: A magnificent fjord with towering mountains. A good resting spot with clean toilets and a viewpoint.
Hiking trails we tackled in the Lofoten Islands: Offersรธykammen โ and Reinebringen โ I’ll provide more details about them in separate posts.
This list only scratches the surface of what the Lofoten Islands have to offer, and there’s so much left for us to explore. In our opinion, the best activity and attraction in the Lofoten Islands is simply marveling at the beauty of nature and the landscapes, as well as hiking to the mountain peaks for different perspectives.
The Lofoten Islands are an easy destination to reach from Finland, as you can drive by car all the way to the endpoint of the islands from your doorstep. Of course, this requires some endurance, depending on where you start your journey from in Finland. Another option is to fly to Narvik, for example, and rent a car from there.
