Want to experience a Greek atmosphere without leaving Finland? Then head to Vöyri in Ostrobothnia!
In Vöyri, you will find the stunning, though slightly faded, Bergpark – The Greek Park. This park is the creation of one man, Ernst Ehrns, who built it in the 1980s. The park was opened to the public only after Ehrns’ death, despite his wish for it to be destroyed after his passing. Fortunately, this request was not fulfilled, and we can still enjoy his creation today.
Visitors to the park are greeted by moss-covered statues of gods, dry fountains, and thick-columned shelters. Nature has taken over the park, adding a touch of mystique to the visit. While some statues have crumbled and others are covered in vegetation, many remain in surprisingly good condition.
The stone paths and stairs in the park are well-maintained, making it easy to navigate, although some bushes do encroach on the paths. At the top of the hill, in the park’s prime spot, stands an impressive and ornate ship statue, offering a view of the surrounding Ostrobothnian landscape. Here, you can imagine yourself in a white toga surveying the scenery like Caesar.
The park is truly impressive, and with a bit of imagination, you can envision how it must have looked in its prime. It’s a little piece of Greece in Ostrobothnia.
You can park your car at the nearby library parking lot during your visit. Bergpark is definitely a reason to make a short visit to Vöyri.
